Showing more ignorance than I care to, this website just now came to my attention. Why I have not found it before I don’t know, but I am glad it’s now on my radar screen. The reason I came across The Women’s Media Center in the first place was an article by Debra Haffner, “Common Ground” is Reducing the Need for Abortion, which is well worth the effort to read. It makes several compelling arguments. I strongly recommend it to anyone – no matter their opinion on abortion.
The Women’s Media Center has many other contributors and, from what I have read, the quality is as high or higher than other mainline publications and websites. I am subscribing to their news feed, simply because this a particular area of interest for me and this website is more informative than most I have found. Below are portions of the “About Us” page on the WMC website.
The Women’s Media Center makes women visible and powerful in the media. Led by our president, the Emmy-winning journalist, writer, and producer Carol Jenkins, the WMC works with the media to ensure that women’s stories are told and women’s voices are heard. We do this in three ways: through our media advocacy campaigns; by creating our own media; and by training women to participate directly in media. We are directly engaged with the media at all levels to ensure that a diverse group of women is present in newsrooms, on air, in print and online, as sources and subjects.
Simply put, there is a crisis of representation in the media. We live in a racially and ethnically diverse nation which is 51% female, but the news media itself remains staggeringly limited to a single demographic … The media should reflect the reality of our lives and can also help to determine the political policies and elections that shape our lives.
Each week, The Women’s Media Center publishes 2-3 pieces of original writing and journalism on our website. These pieces “tell the untold story” through reporting, first-person narratives, and analysis of existing news trends.
Thanks for letting people know about my piece on the Women’s Media Center site. I hope you’ll visit my blog as well, Rev. Andy — and if you aren’t a member of the Religious Institute network, I hope you’ll endorse the Religious Declaration at http://www.religiousinstitute.org
Blessings for your ministry,
Debra
Debra,
I am indeed a member of the Religious Institute network and I have endorsed the Religious Declaration. I believe you are doing very important work and recommend your site to anyone interested in the issues of female reproductive rights, appropriate sex ud for young people and sexuality in general.
Blessings to YOUR ministry,
Andy
